Are you in a dilemma to choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) wireless security cameras? Now dual band wireless security cameras can solve your problem. Let's get to know this kind of hottest and newest wireless security cameras.

What Are Dual Band Wireless Security Cameras?

A dual band wireless security camera is an IP camera that transmits radio signal and video over the air via the WiFi 2.4 GHz or 5 (5.8 GHz) band/frequency. With advanced 802.11ac protocol, this two-mode WiFi IP security camera contains a transmitter that sends a signal to a receiver, which can be connected to a monitor to view or a DVR/NVR to record.

You may notice that there are two popular wireless (WiFi) security IP cameras on the market: 2. 4 GHz and 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) wireless security cameras. However, the newest and best wireless security cameras are dual-band wireless security cameras. One of the biggest hits of this kind of IP security cameras is that you can switch freely between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) frequency bands.

Dual Band Wireless Security Camera Highlights

Why are dual-band wireless security cameras outstanding among other wireless security products? You will get answers below.

1. Two frequency band options. Nowadays, most routers on the market are dual-band. If you find out that either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) is crowded, then you can change to the other frequency band to get higher data transmission rates.

2. Away from signal interference/loss. Your phones, tablets and microwave ovens all transmit 2.4 GHz frequency, which can hinder your 2.4 GHz security camera live video/feed. Under this situation, you should shift to 5 (5.8 GHz) band immediately. (If you only have 2.4 GHz single-band security cameras, it is impossible for to do that.)

3. More installation flexibility. Usually, 2.4 GHz security cameras are ideal for long-range while 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) counterparts are optimal for shorter range. With dual band wireless security cameras, you can install this camera wherever you like as long as the WiFi signal range allows.

Some of you may ask: Why not just go for a 5 GHz (5.8 GHz) security camera since 2.4 GHz frequency band is congested?

Well, if everyone uses 5 GHz frequency band, this band will become crowded soon just like 2.4 GHz band now. Under this situation, should you just abandon your 5 GHz security cameras and go back to 2.4 GHz wireless security cameras? At this point, dual band WiFi security cameras should be your most ideal option.

Hello ZelPal, currently it's a little bit difficult for dual band WiFi security cameras to send signal in 500ft.
Could you please tell me what areas you need to monitor with a dual band wireless IP cameras? So I can give you some suggestions.

You can take a look at RLC-411WS, the 2T2R MIMO antennas enable much stronger network signal, and the WiFi signal will stay strong in 250ft (in open areas): https://reolink.com/product/rlc-411ws/

This is apt bldg. They put up watchdog cams. I dont know on wifi band, just that they had to run cables, following the cable wires for people wth intercom.WATCHDOG.

        • Elvia says:

You can reach the staff of the security camera to check the WiFi band. If the WiFi band frequency has interrupted your clock radio, you may opt to another clock radio or another camera with different WiFi band.

I am looking for the following: a dual band security camers with motion activated flood light and siren alarm. Does Reolink have such a product?

    • Elvia says:

Hi Michael, we don't have such a product as of now but we do plan to launch 2 WiFi cameras with a motion-activated spotlight and built-in siren next year. Stay tuned!

I recently purchased a Reolink Go remote camera to watch my property in the mountains upstate NY. Unfortunately, the camera cannot connect to the cellular network because signal strength is low. Is there any way I can boost the signal to try to connect?

    • Elvia says:

Hi Michael, thank you for reaching out. In this case, it is best to consult your network carrier and ask them if there are any ways to boost signal there. Please make sure that you have used cellular services from the network carriers that Reolink Go works with, including T-Mobile, Nemont, Union Wireless, and Cellular One. Reolink Go also works with these virtual network carriers: US Mobile (T-Mobile service ONLY), Ting, Freedompop, Cricket, and Mint. Hope this helps.

  4. Eli Sage says:

I bought a Reolink wireless security camera only to discover that it is incompatible with my router even though it is a dual band router. I have other cameras using the router that can switch between both but work best with 5GHz. Is there any way I can make my new 2.4GHz wireless camera work or, did I just get duped by Reolink thinking it could work on both? Is there a wireless outdoor camera that can run on 5 GHz?
