Most Common and Useful Wireless Security Camera WiFi Interference Solutions

I feel your pain when you are suffering wireless security camera WiFi Internet interference. Now you can fix/troubleshoot WiFi interference all yourself by following 3 effective WiFi interference solutions below. These 3 ways can help you to solve Lorex, X10 and other brand wireless security camera WiFi interference issues.

Reasons Why Your Wireless Security Camera WiFi Is Interfered

  • Frequency barriers
  • Physical barriers
  • WiFi signal range

#1. Choose the Right Channel

Well, some of you may complain, My wireless security camera WiFi is interfered with my micro oven or cordless phones, how do solve this WiFi interference issue?

Co-channel interference is one of the main reasons why your wireless security cameras WiFi signal is interfered. The best way to solve this issue is to choose less congested WiFi signal channel.

As you may know, many RF (radio frequency) technologies including Bluetooth, walkie talkies, micro ovens, smart phones, etc., usually use 2.4 Ghz band, which would make 2.4 Ghz network band congested.
Choose the Right Channel to Solve WiFi Interference
If your router is dual-band (usually most routers are now all 2.4 and 5 Ghz dual band routers), it can emit 2.4 and 5 (5.8) Ghz signal at the same time. You can change the channel of your wireless security cameras into 5 (5.8 Ghz) channel, which can make your wireless security cameras get rid of frequency interference.

However, the premise of changing your security camera WiFi signal channel freely is that your cameras are dual-band mode. Otherwise, it is impossible for you to change the WiFi signal channel.

Note: If you want to know more about 2.4 & 5 (5.8) Ghz wireless security cameras, you can see the contrast of 2.4 Ghz and 5 (5.8 Ghz) wireless security cameras here.

You can use WiFi explorer or scanner to see whether WiFi signal interference is occurring. It will show you the wireless channel nearby networks are using and recommend the ideal network for you to use.

#2. Avoid Physical Barriers and Position Your Wireless Router Right

Physical barriers, such as building materials, are one of the most likely reasons that a WiFi signal cannot penetrate as far as it should be. View the below chart to see physical materials' effect on the wireless security camera WiFi signal.

Type of Barrier Interference Level
Wood Low
Plaster Low
Synthetic material Low
Glass Low
Water Medium
Bricks Medium
Marble Medium
Concrete High
Metal High
Mirror Very high

The best way to solve physical barriers is to move your router to a different location so that the WiFi signal can be picked up by your wireless security cameras.

Here are 3 simple and useful wireless router positioning tips:

  • Place your wireless router in the central areas of your house (such as living room).
  • Position your router's antenna vertically and make it straight.
  • Elevate your wireless router away from floor.

#3. Use WiFi Range Extender

In some cases, your wireless security camera WiFi interference is caused by WiFi signal range. If the distance between your wireless security cameras and router is too long, it is likely that your wireless security camera WiFi signal will be jammed.

At this point, the easiest and quickest way is to use a WiFi range extender, which can boost the WiFi signal. The device can repeat the WiFi network signal and extend the signal area.

Solve Wireless Security Camera WiFi Interference

Conclusion

At before, wireless (WiFi) security cameras are considered to be inferior to wired counterparts, but research and development professionals have strived to close the gap between wireless and wired connections, and they have made great achievements.

The most developed innovation in the wireless (WiFi) field is 802.11ac frequency, dual band and wireless security cameras with 2T2R MIMO antennas and routers, which can help you solve wireless security camera WiFi interference problems. So the best solution for wireless security camera WiFi interference is to buy dual-band wireless security cameras and routers.

Hello, great post!!! I have the exact problem as you described with losing video and constant connection failure. I purchased a range extender, but I am not sure how to change the WiFi on my camera software to pickup the range extender? I have a 4 camera Akaso system. If I go into the camera software, I don't see how to change the WiFi.
Thank you for any and all support.

Hi I have two Argus 2 cameras set up about 120 feet away outside to monitor my horse. Sometimes the connection or picture is poor, but mostly I get a notice saying the Network is weak and switch to fluent which is an awful picture. I would like to get a wifi extender, to go with my new Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 Router. Have no clue what to get that will enhance the camera for that outdoor distance. The router is located at the end of house by windows facing the horse with no real barriers. Whatever extender is recommended, I also would like to know how difficult or easy it would be to connect it to the cameras. Programming the cameras to the router was an absolute nightmare. Had to return four of them before I got two that worked properly. Thank you for any and all help .

Hello Laurie, our tech team has tested the WiFi range for many times.

Test case 1: in open area, without any obstacle and interference from other WiFi signal, the distance can reach 70~80 meters (about 210~240 feet), the live video is stable and smooth.

Test case 2: Place the camera and router indoor, without interference from other WiFi signal, the distance can be 20 meters (around 60 feet) with 2 walls in between, the live video is stable and smooth.

However, the WiFi signal distance depends on your environments. You can also use a WiFi extender to boost the signal.

      • Laurie Gasnick says:

Thank you for the response, BUT can you advise me on what type of extender to get for 120 feet, preferably a Netgear model to go with Netgear router. There are so many with large price ranges and I don't understand the specifications of what they do, as they usually talk about indoor boosting and games etc

        • Elvia says:

Hello Laurie, currently there is no specific Wi-Fi range extender which we would recommend.

You can consult your wireless router's support since they are selling this kind of product.

Just make sure your Wi-Fi connection is stable, then your Reolink cameras will get a stable connection 🙂

Our ReoLink Argus never has a problem until our neighbors come outside. When our neighbor comes out our camera loses signal. If we take the camera down and move it to the back of the house when he is out we get signal, if we move it back to the side of the house where they hang out we lose signal. It seems he is somehow blocking our camera. How can we fix this?

  4. Elvia says:

Hi Shawn, you may need to make sure that your router has Internet access by connecting a network cable to the Internet port. Next, you may connect the security camera to other Ethernet port to set up the network settings so that security camera can be access through Internet. If you still cannot access the Internet, you'd better contact the network service carrier and ask them for help.

Hi we just installed the 410w, we also have another one the same and two dome ones that have been working flawlessly for two years. This new one is connected via wifi to the network via an extender, it works fine when we are home and on the WiFi but we cannot access it remotely via our mobile 4G network? We have no problems connecting to the other cameras. The new camera is connected to the network when we are trying, we know this because we get motion detection emails with the video.
