In this article, there are 5 ways you can connect your Security IP Camera to your computer. And we will cover the steps on how you should do it without a router, without internet, without a DVR/NVR or without its receiver. The following table summarizes the important information about connecting IP camera to your computer for your reference.

Camera types: POE camera or WiFi camera
OS(operation system): Windows or Mac
Cable: 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 cable attached from the camera
Remotely access by: Camera's UID

Note: First you should install the security camera in the right place. You can refer to How to Install Home Security Cameras Successfully.

5 Methods to Connect Your Security IP Camera to PC/Mac:

To make it easier for you to find the right solution, you can click and jump directly to the section you want.

For example, if your camera is a PoE camera, then you can choose option 3 or 4.

Important Note: The methods recommended below may NOT apply for the battery-powered security cameras, which require initial setup on your phones.

Connect a WiFi or PoE Camera Directly to PC/Mac (without Internet)

Here's how to connect your security IP camera directly to a PC/Mac without an NVR or DVR, without a router network, without WiFi, and without any costs or complicated configurations.

you need to prepare the camera's power adapter and a network cable.

1. Get your security camera charged.

Use the power adapter to get the camera plugged-in and charged. Normally, when you buy a WiFi IP camera, it comes with a power adapter. For a PoE camera, ask the supplier and buy one that's workable for the camera.

2. Use the network cable to connect to the camera and the computer.

Normally there would be a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 cable attached from the camera. Find the network connector from that cable and use the network cable to connect to it. Then connect the other end of the network cable to the computer. If your computer has a network already, disable it – make sure your computer is offline. Connect IP Camera Directly to PC

3. Scan and find out the security camera's IP address on the computer.

Now the security camera is connecting to your computer basically and physically. But you still can't view the camera on the computer. What you need to do now is to scan and find out the camera's IP address. There should be surveillance software from the same supplier with the camera. Take our test as an example. We have Reolink Client on the computer. Launch it and it will automatically scan all the cameras in the same local LAN and show the default IP address (every camera has a default and unique IP address when it leaves the factory). Easy peasy! Camera IP Address

4. Change the computer's IP address to the same network prefix of the IP camera.

So in Step 3, you get your security camera's default IP address. In our test, the default IP address of the camera we use is 192.168.177.100, and now you need to change your computer's IP address to 192.168.177.x, where x identifies the node/host and is the number between 2 and 254. So let's say the computer's IP address is 192.168.177.12.

IP address 101: An IP address consists of two parts – one belongs to the network address and one belongs to the node address. All nodes on a given network share the same network prefix but have a unique host number.

Now to change the computer's IP address (we take Windows 10 as an example):

1) Press the Windows + R keyboard shortcut to bring out the Run box.

2) Enter ”ncpa.cpl” and open the ”Network Connections” window.

Computer Run Box

3) Right-click your computer’ network adapter and select ”Properties”.

Network Adapter Properties

4) Select your computer's Internet Protocol Version and click ”Properties”.

Internet Protocol Properties

5) Select ”Use the following IP address” and change the IP address into 192.168.177.12.

Change Computer IP Address

And done. Now your IP camera is connecting directly and communicating with your PC, because they are now in the same little LAN. You can watch your IP camera with Reolink Client on your computer.

Important: Since there is no router network, the IP camera would not transmit data or send alarms to your phone. Still, you can record and save all the footage onto your computer.

If you're gonna use your IP camera with the computer all the time like this (without router network), you'd better change the default status of your IP camera's IP address to the static to keep it the same all the time, because each time you reboot the IP camera, its IP address will be changed and you will need to do all the steps above again. To keep the IP camera's IP address the same all the time, head to ”Device Settings” and ”Network General” on the Client (Reolink Client in our test), and choose ”Static” for ”Network Access”. And done. Static IP Address for Camera

Connect a Wireless/WiFi Camera to Computer via Router (with Internet)

If you do have WiFi network and need to remotely see the IP camera when you're not there, you can connect your wireless or WiFi camera to computer wirelessly via your router. Please note that you need to have, at least, a power adapter for the camera, a network cable, and a router.

1. Get your WiFi security camera charged.

Use the power adapter to get the camera plugged-in and charged.

2. Use the network cable to connect to the camera and the router.

A WiF camera needs to connect to the router with a network cable for initial setup, because the new camera itself wouldn't recognize and auto-pick up a network that it never uses. Only after the correct WiFi settings can you disconnect the cable from the camera and the router. And yeah again, normally there would be a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 cable attached from the WiFi camera. Find the network connector from that cable and use the network cable to connect to it. Then connect the other end of the network cable to the router. Connect WiFi Camera to PC

3. Watch the IP camera on PC/Mac

On the computer, launch the surveillance software to add the camera and watch live view directly. In our test, we open Reolink Client. Since the computer and the camera are in the same network (using the same router network), Reolink Client automatically searches and displays the camera directly. Click ”Start” and you can view the camera on PC. And you can set up the configurations for all the functions you want the camera to have.

4. Set up WiFi settings and remove the network cable.

Do remember to make the WiFi settings for the camera. On the software, navigate to ”Device Settings” and ”Network”. Choose the WiFi network and enter the password, and done. Cameras from the different brands would have different WiFi settings. Please refer to the guides you get from your supplier. After that, remove the network cable, and then the security IP CCTV camera connects to the computer wirelessly.

Important: If you need to see the IP camera from another computer that is not in the same network, you need to input the camera's UID into the software to remotely access the camera.

Connect a PoE (Wired) IP Camera to Computer without PoE Injector/Switch

Connecting a PoE wired IP camera to a computer via the router is similar to that of a WiFi camera, and even much easier – you don't need to use a power adapter, set up the WiFi and remove the network cable. And you need at least one network cable, and a router with PoE capability to complete the setup.

1. Use the network cable to connect to the camera and the router.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) means you can just use a single network cable for both video and power transmission. So just connect the camera to the router via the network cable, and the camera will get power supply and network access. Cloud Storage Please make sure your router has the PoE feature. If not, try the next method.

2. Watch the IP camera on the computer.

On the computer, launch the surveillance software to add the camera and watch live view directly. In our test, we open Reolink Client. Since the computer and the camera are in the same network, Reolink Client automatically searches and displays the camera directly. Click ”Start” and you can view the camera on PC. And you can set up the configurations for all the functions you want the camera to have.

Important: If you need to see the IP camera from another computer that is not in the same network, you need to input the camera's UID into the software to remotely access the camera.

Connect a PoE (Wired) IP Camera to Computer with PoE Injector/Switch

If your router does not support PoE, you need a PoE injector or PoE switch to help connect your IP camera to PC.In order to complete the setup you need at least a network cable, a router, and a  PoE injector or PoE switch. Since the steps on how to connect a PoE IP camera to PC via PoE Injector/switch are quite the same to that of connecting without a PoE Injector/switch, we'd like to make it more simpler to understand here.

1.connect the security camera, router and PoE injector

Connect all the devices as the picture showed below, make sure your wireless IP camera is connected to a power supply. PoE Camera Connecting to PC

2. Open Reolink Client & add the camera directly

You can now open Reolink Client on your computer, add the camera and watch live view directly. If you need to see the IP camera from another computer that is not in the same network, you need to input the camera's UID into the software to remotely access the camera.

Important: Once you connect the PoE IP camera to the PoE injector or switch which is connected to a router via Ethernet cables, you've successfully connected the camera to the network. For a wireless IP camera, you need to use a network cable to connect it to the router if you haven't set up the WiFi network configuration. And then the wireless IP camera is in the network. You can set up the WiFi configuration later to make the wireless IP camera connect wirelessly.

Connect a CCTV Camera System to PC/Mac (with or without Network)

If you are using a CCTV camera system, like the Reolink PoE kit RLK8-410B4, instead of single security camera, you may need the following tutorial. A CCTV camera system often have their own proprietary networks, and can work with and without your router network.

1. How to connect a CCTV security camera system to a computer without router network

  • Connect all the cameras to the NVR:When you receive the new IP camera system you bought, connect all the devices you got – connect the NVR to your computer's monitor and the mouse, use the power adapters to charge the NVR and cameras, etc. For a WiFi system, once the WiFi NVR and the WiFi cameras are charged, they connected to each other automatically and would start to communicate. For a PoE system, connect the PoE cameras to the NVR via the network cables provided.
  • Start watching the IP cameras:The startup and setup wizard will pop up to guide you to watch your cameras and do other configurations.

Now you can see all the IP cameras on your monitor and start recording.

2. How to connect a CCTV security camera system to a computer with router network

  • Do the step 1 shown above again.
  • Connect the NVR to your router via the network cable provided.
  • Start watching the IP cameras.

The startup and setup wizard will pop up to guide you to watch your cameras and do other configurations. If you need to see the IP cameras from another computer that is not in the same network, you need to input the NVR's UID into the software to remotely access the cameras.

Hi Sureddin, a computer cannot read or talk or connect to a camera directly. Software is needed for you to connect the security camera to the computer. You can check if there is a software CD supplied with your security cameras or download the software on the company's official website.

      • C H says:

you should be able to use your web browser and the default IP address of the camera. http://192.168.xxx.xxx. No additional software or hardware necessary. hard wire the ethernet connection on your PC to the cam and use web browser. If the cam is wifi capable it will broadcast its default SSID for the camera. Connect your PC using wifi and select the cam default SSID.open web browser and use default address. 🙂

Do i have have to switch up the computer every time I wanted to register(my PC just so I need to know) or will the camera do it anyway?

    • Reolink says:

Hi Angie, after you have connected your PC to the camera and completed the configuration, you don't need to switch up the computer all the time when you want to register. You can also access the camera via your smartphones and web browsers.

    • Reolink says:

Hi there, make sure your camera is powered on for normal work. And then check whether the network connection is correct. If you still cannot access login on the software after trying this methods, you can contact the support team of the provider for help.

    • Reolink says:

Hi, I'm not sure what security brand you are using. Normally the security provider will offer an IP address of the camera. Input the IP address of the camera in the address bar of the browser, and then enter the corresponding user name and password of the camera. After login, you are free to stream your camera on your website.

      • Reolink says:

Hi, if you have the IP address, then you simply need to input the IP address of the camera in the address bar of the browser, and enter the user name and password of the camera. After logging in successfully, you can get the live view on your website when your devices are in the same network.

          • Reolink says:

I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CONNECT MY SECURITY DVR TO MY COMPUTER TO ACCESS THE MONITOR ALREADY THERE, I DON'T WANT OR NEED REMOTE ACCESS AND THE CAMERAS ARE INSTALLED ON THE DVR, JUST NEED TO INSTALL DVR TO MY DESK TOP FOR SAVING AND BURNING AND USE OF THE MONITOR

    • Reolink says:

Attach an audio/video cable to the back of the DVR and connect the other end of the cable to the computer. Power up the equipment and wait for your computer to display a ”found new hardware” message. Then follow the prompts to launch your software for downloading DVR recordings to the computer or etc.

  3. Славче Тасиќ says:

Can I connect my IP camera to computer without a router?
    ”No” is wrong answer!
IP camera can be connected directly to PC via an LAN cable.
    1. Connect IP camera directly to PC via LAN cable
    2. Go to LAN network adapter of PC on which you just connected IP camera
and change the IP address to be on the same subnet mask like your camera
    3. Go to IP address of your IP camera via Internet Explorer and you can view your camera.
P.S. Some IP cameras will send you little software via network, so you must first install them.

  4. Martin Hayles says:

I already have 2 Reolink cameras, linked to my imac using Reolink software (I also use iphone app).
The question I have is, can I use any ip Camera with Reolink software?
I have been offered 2 other Non-Reolink IP camera's for free, but want to know if they will work alongside my other cameras via the Reolink software?

    • Yolanda says:

Hey Martin. No, Reolink software, including Reolink App on smartphones and Reolink Client on computers, is designed to work with Reolink cameras only.

  5. Neil G Brinkworth says:

After setting up using the camera PC software does this software have to be running all of the time for the cameras to record on motion detection to disk.

    • Yolanda says:

Yup. If you are planning to use a computer to monitor with the camera and record motion events, the software has to be running all the time on the computer. So we recommend NVRs (Network Video Recorders) or SD cards to go with a security camera.

    • Yolanda says:

Well, that depends on whether your 4-channel wireless NVR has the function or not. If it supports connecting to the network wirelessly, it would connect to your hot spot, because most hot spots are 2.4Ghz WiFi. If not, you have to use a network cable to connect the NVR to your router.

      • Walid Sadek says:

how i can connect the 4 ip cameras to the router then the router connect it to the nvr..pls help i didnt sleep siince last night

        • Yolanda says:

Hi Walid, you check if your 4 IP cameras are PoE ones or WiFi ones and if your router comes with PoE ports or not. If your cameras are PoE ones and your router comes with PoE ports, you may connect the IP cameras to the router directly via Ethernet cables. If not, you need to power up your camera with power adapters and connect them to the router with network cables.
Then you may connect the NVR to the same router as well. Make sure that your IP cameras and NVR and under the same LAN and your cameras will record to the NVR.
Here is a detailed guide on IP camera configuration for your reference, https://reolink.com/ip-camera-configuration/#part2. Hope this helps.

  6. Yolanda says:

Hey Tim. Reolink software, including Reolink App on smartphones and Reolink Client on computers, is designed to work with Reolink cameras only.

  7. Yolanda says:

Hey Jody. To add a camera directly to PC, you can refer to the steps I mentioned in Method 1. It's true that it may only help hook up one, because most computers have only one network port. See if yours has two or more. But if you have a router offering network for the computer and your 2 cameras, things would be much easier. You may refer to the other solutions I mentioned in this post.

  8. Nick Johnston says:

I have several issues with your guide that I hope you can clarify:
    https://reolink.com/connect-security-ip-camera-to-pc/

Problem 1, LAN connection directly to PC:

    Method 1:

Step 2: Does this mean ALL network adapters should be turned off? If so, how is it that Step 3 is supposed to work? Obviously, the LAN adapter needs to be active, and others off.

Step 3: What is my camera's IP range? Without knowing this first, it is impossible to set up the TCP/IPv4 LAN settings in Windows. Without knowing this, the Roelink Client will not show connected devices.

Step 4: I tried using the suggested 192.168.177.x, (192.168.177.12) this does not work. I had also set my adapter to 192.168.1.x, this too does not work, but yet, if connected to the router, this IP range does work. I do NOT want to connect to router, I want to connect to PC. Neither of the above methods work. The ‘Add Device' (step 3) shows nothing connected.

    Problem 2, WiFi access:
    Method 2 (using router):
Everything is working, except for WiFi. What is the Camera's WiFi adapter MAC address? Is it the same as the LAN address or different? How do I find out? In the Client software, Device Settings, WiFi settings (or even Network General), it should really show the MAC address of the camera's WiFi.

I have tried several Routers, but every time I click on Wi-Fi Test, all I get in return is "Wi-Fi Test failed!" Some routers have MAC filtering [I have allowed the MAC address, but is the WiFi MAC the same or different?], some do not.

    Methods 3&4: I
am using the supplied power adapter, only methods 1&2 apply.

Firmware has been updated as of May 1st 2018.

    • Yolanda says:

Hi. Here's all the quick answers:

      a). Problem 1, method 1, step 2.
I think it's so clarified: if your computer has network already, disable it – so you need to turn off the network of YOUR COMPUTER. Many ways to do this – 1. if it's a desktop computer, to disconnect the wired Ethernet network, unplug your Ethernet cable from its jack; 2. if it's a laptop and it's connected to the network wirelessly, to turn off the WiFi connection on the laptop, right-click the ”Wireless Connection” icon and select ”Disable”; and etc.

      b). step 3.
In step 3, the only thing you need to do is to get the camera's IP address. If you're using a Reolink camera, Reolink Client will help. As mentioned in step 2, every camera has a default IP address that's randomly generated when it leaves the factory, so Reolink Client will help to find out the IP address. If not, it's because you've set up the firewall. To troubleshoot this, go to: https://reolink.com/faq/turn-off-firewall-on-windows-10/

If you're using other cameras from other brands, there should be some kind of software like Reolink Client to do the same job. Please note that Reolink Client only works for Reolink cameras. In our test, we use a Reolink cam, so we use Reolink Client to do the job.

      c). step 4.
There's no ”suggested” IP address, in the post, we've already clarified that we're showing our test. So it's just an example to show you the steps. The exact information should be based on your actual situation. Pls refer to the step 3 you're done and use the IP address according to what you've get.

d). Problem 2, WiFi access, method 2 (using router)
If you're using Reolink WiFi cameras, please refer to the FAQ from our support team: https://reolink.com/faq/wifi-test-failed/

      e). method 3&4
In Method 3, you don't need the camera's powered adapter to do the work, because a network cable will do for both power transmission and video transmission.

The camera's powered adapter can only do the job of power supply for the camera. So in Method 4, if you're saying the power adapter does not work, the camera won't work (because the camera can't ever get power supply.) So it's very very very weird that it's working in method 1 and 2 but not in method 4. Please check if actually the power adapter works.

      Hope all these help.

so has anyone got the funlux ip wifi camera to connect to there computer via wifi? funlux said it is impossible to do. i want the port numbers so i can get it to work on my tinycam app. and my pc app. but funlux will not give out the port. funlux has to be able to connect thru my home inside my network being i see my modem . i have the ip address for this camera but can't find the port it uses.
is there a program for finding the port? or can my pc find the port and if so how do i do it? any youtubers showing this? thanks

    • DoeJohn says:

Hey, 2yrs ago you asked for a method of identifying port traffic. I'm not sure identifying the port/protocol will do much good since(I'm guessing) your wifi network is generated from your ISP's modem/router. However, if your IP camera is broadcasting traffic, or using neighbor discovery protocols you can likely monitor this with applications like Wireshark. If your pc/mac/laptop is able you can also use the wireless NIC(wifi) to monitor the wireless traffic via airmon-ng(google the term for a plethora of videos about it.) Goodluck.

Hello, Deborah, your security camera will record events directly to the SD card even without WiFi. So, if you only want to view the footage recorded on SD Card, you don't have to use a WiFi extender to connect your camera. However, to view the camera on your phone via security camera viewer app, you need to connect that camera to the Internet, via WiFi or an Ethernet cable. To determine which options to choose, you may figure which devices are available at your home and follow the connection diagram in the product page of the extender you've mentioned above. Hope this helps.

Hello, I just bought a home cctv kit and want to connect it to my computer monitor but my monitor only has one hdmi port which is being used to connect to the desktop tower. The monitor has a D SUB and DVI-D port available, could I use any of these to connect the DVR?
    Thanks.

    • Yolanda says:

Hi, Mike, most computer monitors support two input sources: HDMI & VGA (uses D-Sub connector). So, you can connect the DVR to your monitor via the VGA/D-Sub port. By switching the input source of your computer monitor, you are able to use your computer as usual and watch security camera live feed. Hope this helps.

hello, I have an IP cam that can't connect to the net, searching with IP also fail to find it. Can I connect it to a dvr which I tried but no luck as well. Any suggestion that could help? thank U for your time.

    • Yolanda says:

Hello there, please make sure that your IP camera is powered on properly first. Then you may connect the camera to the router's LAN port with an Ethernet cable and continue the network settings. Also note that an IP security camera works with NVR only so you won't be able to connect it to a DVR. Hope this helps.

    • Yolanda says:

Hello there, make sure that you have added an SD card to your Argus 2 camera so that you can playback the previous recordings on Reolink app or Client. Here is a detailed tutorial for your reference, https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003452213. If you want to delete the previous videos in the SD card, you may pull the SD card out off the camera and connect it to your computer and erase them from the SD card. Also note that when the SD card is full, the older recordings will be overwritten automatically. Or you may subscribe Reolink Cloud Service, https://cloud.reolink.com, and upload the recordings to Cloud so that you can view the videos at any time, anywhere. Please feel free to contact me if you have met any further problems.

I reset my camera and am trying to get it back on line. but when I use my smart phone, Tracfone, to get the App my phone just just keeps on searching for the camera.

The bottom line is that it won't revert back to is original stage. I have deleted the App off my phone and reload it and it keeps on doing it. I just want a App to get the camera going.

    • Yolanda says:

Hi there, please remove the camera added to your app first. Then reset the camera again and redo the initial setup so as to make the camera work properly again. Do not add your camera to the app before you finish the initial setup. Hope this would help.

    • Yolanda says:

Hi Irshu, it depends on the security camera models that you are using and the Ethernet port speed as well. It is only recommended that you connect 4 IP cameras to a PoE switch before connecting the switch to your PC if the Ethernet port is 1000 Mbps at your location.
To ensure proper power supply for the IP cameras, you need to choose a PoE switch with at least 30W for fixed-lens IP cameras, 40W for IP cameras with varifocal lenses, and 100W for PTZ IP cameras. Hope this helps.

  15. Pam says:

Yolonda, Is there a way to set up my Wi-Fi surveillance camera using my cellular data? It's battery operated and with no cables or even a USB port. Just want to record to an SD card. But it forces you to set up w/an app via wi fi.- No Wi Fi and I don't trust public WiFi.

    • Reolink says:

Hi Pam, you may connect your WiFi surveillance camera to the WiFi hotspot shared by your mobile phone and finish the initial setup. Once the initial setup is done, you can disconnect the WiFi connection and the security camera will record to the SD card. Hope this helps.

      • Pam says:

Thanks Yolanda, I'm aware I may set up via wifi. My question is: ”Can I set up my camera using my mobile data?” I don't wish to use wifi.
        Thanks, Pam

        • Reolink says:

Hello Pam, sorry that we have got you wrong earlier. We are not sure if it is the same for all WiFi battery-powered security cameras but for Reolink WiFi battery-powered security cameras, you cannot set them up using your mobile data.
If you don't trust public WiFi, you may set the camera up with WiFi hotspot on your smartphone, just like what we have shared with you in last reply. Hope this would clarify.

    • Yolanda says:

Hello Nancy, it is best to install a security camera viewer app on your smartphone to access the cameras on your phone. For example, you may use Reolink app to watch live stream of Reolink cameras on a smartphone. If you are not sure which app to install, you may contact the professionals from your security camera brand for further info. Hope this helps.

Hi there, it depends on whether your camera is compatible with other software. Generally speaking, you may not use an IP camera as a normal PC camera. For further info, it is best to consult the professional from your security camera brand. Hope this helps.

And pick up a Microsoft Certification while you are at it and then learn ”C” ...”man”. He would not be asking the question if he had that knowledge. You think you are brilliant I am sure. Yoyo is a good name for you.

Hi there, it depends on if there is a network port on the back of your camera. If yes, you may connect the camera to your PC with a network cable and use the camera as a web camera. If not, you'd better consult the tech team from the security camera brand for more info. Hope this helps.

Is anyone using a Mac for their Reolink Client? When the app loads it shows all my cameras but when I slide it to my other screen all camera's are white. Does anyone have this problem? How did you fix it if so?

Hello Robert, thank you for sharing your opinions with us. Aside from the WiFi cameras, there are PoE cameras, battery-powered cameras and security systems available now. Users may use security camera software to access the camera on a PC but that is not the only way. Other ways mentioned in this post shall work for all types of cameras, not only the WiFi wireless ones. 🙂

Hi, there. You may try Reolink PoE cameras such RLC-410, RLC-520. They are also 5MP, power over Ethernet, and you can connect them to an NVR and view the videos on monitor. If you need PoE cameras with person/vehicle detection, which is more powerful, you may also get a RLC-510A or RLC-520A. Hope this helps.
